What is Spiritual Direction?

What is Spiritual Direction

Christian spiritual direction is “help given by one Christian to another which enables that person to pay attention to God’s personal communication to him or her, to respond to this personally communicating God, to grow in intimacy with this God, and to live out the consequences of the relationship.” From: “The Practice of Spiritual Direction” by William A. Barry and William J. Connolly

We believe that God acts concretely in our world, is present in all human experience and can be known in and through that experience. Our lives are sacred journeys and God’s spirit is active and present in them. The focus of the direction conversation is the directee’s human experience of and relationship with God. This is a unique relationship in in which a person is invited to attend to God’s presence in their lives. Spiritual direction is about listening deeply to the stories and faith journey of another. As spiritual directors, we acknowledge that the Holy Spirit is the ultimate director in any conversation.

Spiritual Direction usually occurs once a month and lasts for one hour. Fees vary, but are moderate and are established by the director and the directee during the first introductory session.

Spiritual Direction is for anyone desiring a deeper connection to God, themselves and the world. It is for anyone who wants to take a look at their interior landscape and see what is there. So if you are sensing or desiring something more on your spiritual journey, Spiritual Direction may be just what you are looking for.
